Eesa - AbdAllaah ibn AmtAllaah (Alayhi Salaam)

While millions around the world would be celebrating Christmas tomorrow, let us take a look at what this means to Muslims.

What do we think about Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) and his mother?

Do we believe that he was born on 25th December?

Can we celebrate Christmas with our Christian friends?

Can we wish them Merry Christmas?

MARYAM BINTE IMRAAN:

Maryam binte Imraan was a pious woman who grew up under the sponsorship of her uncle Zakariyyah (Alayhis Salaam), as her father died when she was born. She used to spend most of her time in seclusion, worshipping Allaah. She worshipped Allaah so much that she had no equal in the matters of worship.

Allaah was so pleased with her that HE sent for her miraculous provision (fruits out of season). Seeing this, her uncle Zakariyyah, who had grown old and longed for a child (and had a barren wife) made dua to Allaah to bless him with a child, in the same as way He sent these miraculous fruits to Maryam. He was then blessed with a rightoeus child, Yahya (Alayhis Salaam).

This karaamah of Maryam binte Imran is mentioned by her pleased Rabb like this,

“So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zakariyyah Every time Zakariyyah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, ‘O Maryam, from where is this [coming] to you?’ She said, ‘It is from Allaah. Indeed, Allaah provides for whom He wills without account.’

At that, Zakariyyah called upon his Lord, saying, ‘My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication’”

[Surah Aal 'Imraan 3:37-38].

Al-Qurtubi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

When Zakariyyah entered upon her, he would find winter fruits with her in the summer, and summer fruits with her in the winter.

He said: O Maryam, from where is this coming to you?

She said: It is from Allah.

At that point, Zakariyya began to hope for a son and said: The One Who gives her this is able to bless me with a son.

Allaah was so much pleased with this servant and worshipper that He chose her to bless her with yet another miracle - a miracle like no other, the miracle of giving birth to a child with no male to aid in procreation.

The angels gave her the glad tidings that Allaah had chosen her:

“And (remember) when the angels said: ‘O Maryam! Verily, Allaah has chosen you, purified you (from polytheism and disbelief), and chosen you above the women of the ‘Aalameen (mankind and jinn) (of her lifetime).’

O Maryam! ‘Submit yourself with obedience to your Lord (Allaah, by worshipping none but Him Alone) and prostrate yourself, and bow down along with Ar-Raaki‘oon (those who bow down)’”

[Surah Aal ‘Imraan 3:42-43]

Then the angels gave Maryam the glad tidings that Allaah would bestow upon her a child, whom He would create and bring to life with the words “Be! And it is.” This child’s name would be Eesa ibn Maryam (Jesus son of Mary). He would be held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, and he would be a Messenger to the Children of Israel, whom he would teach the Book and wisdom, the Tawraat and Injeel. And he would have attributes and miracles like nobody else.

Allaah says describing this,

“(Remember) when the angels said: ‘O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allaah gives you the glad tidings of a Word [“Be!” — and he was! i.e. ‘Eesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam (Mary)] from Him, his name will be the Messiah ‘Eesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, and will be one of those who are near to Allaah.

He will speak to the people, in the cradle and in manhood, and he will be one of the righteous.’

She said: ‘O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me.’ He said: ‘So (it will be) for Allaah creates what He wills. When He has decreed something, He says to it only: “Be!” and it is’”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:45-47]

Allaah then tells us the rest of the glad tidings of the angels to Maryam of her son Eesa (peace be upon him):

“And He (Allaah) will teach him [‘Eesa (Jesus)] the Book and Al-Hikmah (i.e. the Sunnah, the faultless speech of the Prophets, wisdom), (and) the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel).

And will make him [‘Eesa (Jesus)] a Messenger to the Children of Israel (saying): ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, that I design for you out of clay, a figure like that of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allaah’s Leave; and I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I bring the dead to life by Allaah’s Leave. And I inform you of what you eat, and what you store in your houses. Surely, therein is a sign for you, if you believe.

And I have come confirming that which was before me of the Tawraat (Torah), and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a proof from your Lord. So fear Allaah and obey me.

Truly, Allaah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him (Alone). This is the Straight Path’”

[Surah Aal ‘Imraan 3:48-51]

Allaah says,

“And mention in the Book (the Qur’aan, O Muhammad, the story of) Maryam (Mary), when she withdrew in seclusion from her family to a place facing east.

She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our Rooh [angel Jibreel (Gabriel)], and he appeared before her in the form of a man in all respects.

She said: ‘Verily, I seek refuge with the Most Gracious (Allaah) from you, if you do fear Allaah.’

(The angel) said: ‘I am only a messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son.’

She said: ‘How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?’

He said: ‘So (it will be), your Lord said: ‘That is easy for Me (Allaah). And (We wish) to appoint him as a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us (Allaah), and it is a matter (already) decreed (by Allaah)’ ”

[Surah Maryam 19:16-21]

When the Angel Jibreel told her the above words, she submitted to the will of Allaah and the angel breathed into the sleeves of her garment. This was a very difficult test for this chaste woman who was revered and honoured by the society she lived in.

Allaah says,

“So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place (i.e. Bethlehem valley about 4-6 miles from Jerusalem).

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a date palm. She said: ‘Would that I had died before this, and had been forgotten and out of sight!’”

[Surah Maryam 19:22-23]

Allaah then provided this righteous woman with food and water and commanded her not to speak to any human being - this was in preparation for the miracle that HE wanted the people to witness and believe in.

Allaah says,

“Then [the babe ‘Eesa (Jesus) or Jibreel (Gabriel)] cried unto her from below her, saying: ‘Grieve not: your Lord has provided a water stream under you.

And shake the trunk of the date palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon you.

So eat and drink and be glad. And if you see any human being, say: “Verily, I have vowed a fast unto the Most Gracious (Allaah) so I shall not speak to any human being this day”’”

[Surah Maryam 19:24-26]

Allaah is absolutely perfect in His powers of Creation and Lordship. He is all able to create what He wills and how He wills. The birth of Eesa (peace be upon him) is as miraculous as was the creation of Adam (peace be upon him). Allaah created Adam from dust without any parent, and He created Hawwa from the rib of Adam (from a father, but without a mother). He then caused the progeny of Adam to have both a father and a mother. And HE CREATED Eesa from his mother without a fathher.

Subhan Allaah Al-Azeem!

MIRACULOUS BIRTH OF EESA IBN MARYAM:

After the child was born to her, Maryam returned to her people to Jerusalem, holding her newly born baby, Eesa. The people despised her and alleged her of committing a horrible sin, although her parents were righteous and chaste. She remained silent and pointed towards the baby and asked them to question him.

Allaah says,

“Then she brought him (the baby) to her people, carrying him. They said: ‘O Mary! Indeed you have brought a thing Fariyy (a mighty thing).

O sister (i.e. the like) of Haaroon (Aaron)! Your father was not a man who used to commit adultery, nor your mother was an unchaste woman.’

Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?’”

[Surah Maryam 19:27-29]

THE SPEECH OF NEWLY BORN EESA IBN MARYAM:

Although he was a child in the cradle, Eesa ibn Maryam spoke to the people - proving the innocence and chastity of his mother and the power and the ALMIGHTY Allaah!

Allaah says,

“He [‘Eesa (Jesus)] said: ‘Verily, I am a slave of Allaah, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet;

And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me Salaah (prayer), and Zakaah, as long as I live.

And dutiful to my mother, and made me not arrogant or defiant.

And Salaam (peace) be upon me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!’”

[Surah Maryam 19:30-33]

So, when we ponder this concise speech of this blessed prophet of Allaah - the first words that he spoke were that that he is he SLAVE OF ALLAAH. He did not say that he was the son of Allaah.

SLANDER AGAINST ALLAAH!

The People of the Book differed concerning Eesa and said that he was the son of Allaah, and some said that he was the third of three (trinity).

Nauzubillaah! The claims of Christians are false and the information provided in the Qur'an about Eesa ibn Maryam is that he was the Slave and the Messenger of Allaah. Allaah calls the claims of Christians slandering against Him - how great a sin this is!

Allaah says,

“Such is ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). (It is) a statement of truth, about which they doubt (or dispute).

It befits not (the Majesty of) Allaah that He should beget a son [this refers to the slander of Christians against Allaah, by saying that ‘Eesa (Jesus) is the son of Allaah]. Glorified (and Exalted) be He (above all that they associate with Him). When He decrees a thing, He only says to it: “Be!” and it is.

[‘Eesa (Jesus) said]: ‘And verily, Allaah is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him (Alone). That is the Straight Path. (Allaah’s religion of Islâmic Monotheism which He did ordain for all of His Prophets).’

Then the sects differed [i.e. the Christians about ‘Eesa (Jesus)], so woe unto the disbelievers [those who gave false witness by saying that ‘Eesa (Jesus) is the son of Allaah] from the Meeting of a great Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection, when they will be thrown in the blazing Fire)

[Surah Maryam 19:34-37]

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS OR WISHING MERRY CHRISTMAS:

Therefore, it is clear that Eesa ibn Maryam had clearly told the people that he was only a slave and messenger of Allaah. He never claimed to be the son of Allaah. Believing in Eesa ibn Maryam as the prophet of Allaah who was sent as a Messenger to Bani Israel is an essential part of the faith of Muslims, as our faith is not complete if we do not believe in all the Messengers of Allaah.

Allaah says,

“The Messenger (Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, ‘We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers...’”

[Surah al-Baqarah 2:285].

Therefore, we believe in all the books sent by Allaah and in all of His Messengers with no differentiating by believing in some and disbelieving in others. However, we follow the religion of Islaam (the way of worship and living) as taught by Muhammad-ur-Rasool Allaah (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam), as he was he LAST of all the Messengers sent by Allaah and the Deen of Allaah was perfected and completed by him, Alhamdulillaah.

No form of celebration of anyone's birthday is approved in Islaam. The ignorant people who celebrate the birthday of Rasool Allaah (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) commit an innovation, the greatest of all innovations.

IMITATING THE KUFFAAR

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you hand span by hand span, cubit by cubit, to the extent that if they entered the hole of a lizard, you will enter it too.” We said: “O Messenger of Allaah, (do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?” He said: “Who else?”

[al-Bukhaari, 1397; Muslim, 4822]

This hadeeth indicates that it is haraam to imitate the Jews and the Christians, and that those who follow them and tread the same path as them are criticized. Islam has reinforced this prohibition, by describing those who imitate the kuffaar as being of them.

It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”

[Abu Dawood, 3512]

Celebrating Christmas is not only an innovation, but also immitation of Kuffar which is strongly prohibited in Islaam. Easa ibn Maryam (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has NOTHING to do with this innovation or the innovators. Christmas is only an innovated, polytheistic celebration - which makes Shaytan and his followers happy.

With regards to wishing Christians on Christmas, this is also strongly prohibited. It involves supporting them in their belief and rather, as mentioned above, supporting the slanderers of Allaah, that He has a SON!! Astaghfirullaah! Astaghfirullaah!

Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Congratulating the disbelievers on the occasion of Christmas or any of their other religious festivals is haraam according to scholarly consensus, because it implies approval of what they follow of disbelief and approving of it for them. Even if he does not approve of this disbelief for himself, it is haraam for the Muslim to approve of rituals of disbelief or to congratulate someone else for them. Similarly, it is haraam for the Muslims to imitate the disbelievers by having parties on these occasions, or exchanging gifts, distributing sweets or plates of food, taking time off work, and so on, because the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood.

Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) also said:

Celebrating the eve of the birth of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam) is not valid, whether from the point of view of the date or the point of view of Islamic teachings.

To conclude, knowing the exact date of birth of ANY prophet of Allaah is not possible. So, even merely believing that Eesa (Alayhis Salaam) was born on the 25th of December or that Muhammad (Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) was born on the 12th (or even the 9th as some do) of Rabi al-Awwal is a sin! In fact both these days are the days when Shaytan is the most happy - 25th December every year - as people slander Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'ala (Nauzubillaah) that He had a son and on the 12th of Rabi al-Awwal, every year as the innovators celebrate grandly a prohibited immitation of the Kuffar and call it Milaad, while in reality it was the day that Rahmat al lil-Aalameen (sallaallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) departed from the world and returned to Allaah.

So, we should strive hard to remain away from both these innovators and try to guide the ignorant of them towards the truth with patiece and hikmah. But in no way is it permissible to congratulate them or to accept sweets, meals, fruits or cakes! There is no point of kindness in this. True Islaam is to stand for truth and speak for Allaah politely, but firmly.

May Allaah make His love and honour the purpose of our life on this earth and help us to fight with Iblees at each step and make our path towards Jannah easy.

Ameen Ya Rabb..
